Fan Fiction Definition – What’s the best definition for the fan fiction genre? The fan fiction genre is made up of stories based on existing characters from a television series, movie, comic book, or other sort of pop cultural character that the author could be or is a fan of. Books in the fan fiction genre are written by fans of the original creator’s work, often written for other fans of the same work. The authors of fan fiction do not own the rights to the characters (the original creator does), so they are limited in their ability to publish their work in a professional setting.
