How-To Genre – What’s the best definition for the how-to genre? The how-to nonfiction book genre is made up of books that explain, with detailed description, how-to do, make, use, fix, repair, or accomplish something. The books in the how-to genre are meant to help non-experts preform specific tasks. The most common are books that explain how to fix or repair something, or that explain something in simple terms that is very complicated (possibly things pertaining to technology or science).

With the popularity of self-help books, how-to books became broader in their spectrum of instruction assistance. But, the most common how-to books have to do with creating something or working something that is beyond the readers existing knowledge.
